ISO 12944:2018 is one of the most important International standards for protection of steel against corrosion by protective paints systems

📌Classification of environment is the key factor to describe the corrosion category

📌Based on atmospheric conditions there are six different corrosion environments are classified

📌Those environments are based on the mass(or thickness)loss by standard low-carbon steel specimens

💥C1 Very low corrosivity – Mass loss <10 g/m2 after first year of exposure

💥C2 Low corrosivity – Mass loss >10 to 200 g/m2 after first year of exposure

💥C3 Medium corrosivity – Mass loss >200 to 400 g/m2 after first year of exposure

💥C4 High corrosivity – Mass loss >400 to 650 g/m2 after first year of exposure

💥C5 Very high corrosivity – Mass loss >650 to 1500 g/m2 after first year of exposure

💥CX Extreme corrosivity – Mass loss >1500 to 5500 g/m2 after first year of exposure

📌Apart from this there’s different categories for water and soil.

📌Protective coatings selections are based on this environmental category to protect the steel Parts from the corrosion.
